1. Choose a specific primary text (or texts) you want to work on
2. When you see the text, make sure you photograph it
3. If it is a very rare text, consider looking at a facsimile
4. Take note of the date it was published, by who, and where
5. Document the size (ie. was it octavo, quarto or folio?)
6. Document notable features: erasures, repetitions, and deletions
7. Produce a description of the document that would enable someone else to find this particular copy, even if there are nearly-exact likenesses elsewhere
