- Choose a specific primary text (or texts) you want to work on
- When you see the text, make sure you photograph it
- If it is a very rare text, consider looking at a facsimile
- Take note of the date it was published, by who, and where
- Document the size (ie. was it octavo, quarto or folio?)
- Document notable features: erasures, repetitions, and deletions
- Produce a description of the document that would enable someone else to find this particular copy, even if there are nearly-exact likenesses elsewhere
